All the air has been sucked out of my body. There were days where I thought I saw him in the shadows watching me, but this isn’t my imagination—he’s here, in front of me, watching me with cautious eyes. His tall, overpowering physique, and that thick, dark brown hair I used to run my hands through for hours at a time. I look at his pink parted lips, that I used to think were molded just for me, from how easily our lips fit together like two missing pieces. My hand goes to my beating heart as I look at his smooth tan skin covered in tattoos, I’ve kissed time and time again.

His eyes are a whiskey brown, ones I could stare into for days. He’s such a hauntingly beautiful man. “Brooklyn,” he utters with that deep voice of his, his accent still eloquently thick. I breathe in, hoping to catch a whiff of his natural scent that used to cover his body.

He’s alive.

“Brooklyn,” he says again, causing me to shudder. Goosebumps rush up my arm. His voice still has the same effect on me even after all these years, making my ears ring when I hear it. "Brooklyn," he repeats solemnly, taking a cautious step forward.

“Ho—How, how are you still alive?” Keiko, Jace, and Jackson say nothing, and if they did, my hearing turned off when I saw him. I killed him . . . I killed him with my own two hands. I recount that horrid night that’s plagued my dreams and caused so many sleepless nights of tears and regret. “I hit you with a lamp, and you were bleeding everywhere. You stopped breathing. You were dead!" I shout.

"Brooklyn, calm down."

My confusion morphs into hot rage. Is he serious right now? “Calm down?” I pick up a nearby lamp, pull it from the socket, and throw it at his head. Unfortunately, he ducks before impact. The lamp crashes against the wall.

“Brooklyn, let me explain.”

How is he still alive? I watched him die with my own two eyes. He wasn't breathing and there was blood everywhere. He was dead! Alessio takes a few steps towards me. My body tenses the closer he gets, and I subconsciously step back.

He clears his throat, followed by a deep sigh. He’s still the same, that damn throat clearing followed by a sigh. He did it when he asked me on our first date, when we first kissed, before we made love, and when he asked me to run away with him. The simple action to most means nothing but I know what it means with Alessio; he’s nervous. I know everything about him—every little thing.

Keiko pulls at Jace’s arm, forcing him out the door.

“I faked my death.”

"Obviously," I sneer. "Why?"

"I did it to save you."

"Save me?"

Tricking me into thinking I killed him is saving me? What type of fucked-up logic is that? Alessio dying fucked me up more than he could imagine. The confusion, the grief—the guilt! My mind went to places .
